Well, if I had to give tips on what it takes for a small town girl to set off on an 8000 km (5000 miles?) journey with three small children… the first would definitely be: think it through carefully.

It has been two weeks since we embarked on this journey with three kids and three animals, traveling via two different routes, only to finally arrive here, in Rochester.

It was smooth – Domi, after about an hour and a half of paperwork and the purchase of an extra plane ticket, managed to check in with two dogs, then nearly sprinted to catch his flight. He landed in Toronto, where he barely managed to rent a car, after which he had a relatively uneventful 1500 km drive—the one dictated by Lufthansa’s new internal regulations…

The next day, we woke up fresh and well-rested after a glorious four-minute sleep at 2 a.m., only to rush off to the airport at 3 a.m. after children’s meltdown, bringing along the cat, the kids, six large and three small suitcases, plus three child car seats.

A mere 45 minutes later, we were all checked in, and off we went on the first flight. Of course, we were sure the excitement would keep the kids awake—so naturally, they all fell asleep.

At Frankfurt airport, after a little emergency playground session, we braced ourselves for the second, nearly nine-hour flight. Apart from Panka insisting on sleeping exclusively in the baby carrier on my back—precisely during every turbulence warning, „stay seated” announcement, and seatbelt mandate—we managed quite well.

Of our six suitcases, only four broke in the process, and the two-hour car rental procedure after 48 hours spent awalke practically flew by. The boys, by that point, could have driven from Minneapolis to Rochester with their eyes closed (haha), just to finally reunite with our much-missed and otherwise indispensable Daddy, who had already secured our accommodation.

So yes, this is how super easy it is to relocate.

Now all that’s left is to battle about a week of jet lag (especially for the kids), the constant English-induced brain fog, the homesickness, and the kids’ very justified meltdowns.

Long story short: we’re here, we’ve settled in, it’s a good place, and things will smooth out over time. But until then, I’ll keep writing about our latest adventures.

For example—how does a woman set out to buy some sharper clothes for her husband, when last time she went hunting for a Rammstein Dicke Titten T-shirt for him? And now, well… I guess that’s not exactly workplace-appropriate. Not to mention the massive Mjölnir-themed heathen one, which I think will have to be reserved for weekends.

In the past few days, temperatures have been bouncing around -16°C (I suspect buncing is for just to keep warm). Yesterday, we had a snowstorm—paradise for winter lovers. The kids are fine outside for one to two hours straight, after which they spend the rest of the day looking like they just walked out of a Tyrolean juice commercial. Döme consumes roughly 25 icicles per outing, and the real kicker? There are still 75 left.

The kids are waking up now, but I’ll continue later—at some point, I’ll post all this on my own page instead of spamming here.

Wishing you a lovely day here, and a good afternoon back home!

In the picture: our slightly defeated-looking pup is playing vet. Since we’ve been at this game for hours, he’s now the actual vet—everyone else has been eliminated. Background: boy with guitar. Foreground: Ella’s feet.

Thanks for your attention!
